The development of Integrated Care Systems and Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships have the common goal of working in close collaboration to improve population health and care for patients. ICSs evolve into an even closer collaboration in partnership with local councils and others, take collective responsibility for managing resources, delivering NHS standards and improving the health of the population they serve. Leadership of and within ICSs and STPs presents challenges.
ICSs and STPs vary in size and composition, and are not currently statutory organisations, they continue to evolve in terms of governance and structure. This means that all progress is delivered through managing a mix of complex relationships and collaboration leading to the memorable quote from the 2019 Kings Fund report Leading for integrated care: “if you think competition is hard, you should try collaboration”
